WASHINGTON, July 7 (DC Times Online) — House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer rejected Democratic plans to scrutinize President Donald Trump’s America 250 celebration, saying critics “would rather Donald Trump fail and America fail” than mark the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Comer, a Kentucky Republican, made the remarks on Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show” after House Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee, led by Rep. Jared Huffman of California, released a 55-page report accusing Trump of turning the semiquincentennial into a partisan event tied to his political and religious agenda.
CNN reported that the Democratic interim report said donors intended to support the bipartisan America250 nonprofit were redirected, without their knowledge, to Freedom 250, a separate nonprofit linked to Trump-backed events. The report also alleged Trump allies tried to sideline America250 while putting Trump at the center of the celebration and selling access to him in exchange for donations.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez rejected the accusations, calling them “categorically false,” CNN reported.
Comer said Democrats would “investigate and harass Donald Trump” if they win back the House majority, and he said he had seen nothing illegal by Trump or his family in connection with the events. The reporting did not make clear whether House Democrats had launched a formal congressional investigation.
