GELENDZHIK, RUSSA, Aug. 6 (World Daily Times) — A drone or projectile exploded Monday on a crowded beach near Arkhipo-Osipovka, a village in Russia’s Krasnodar region, killing seven people and injuring dozens, according to regional authorities. The blast took place near the Black Sea resort area of Gelendzhik, where tourists and residents had gathered for the holiday season.

The incident has produced competing accounts from Russian and Ukrainian officials. The evidence available so far does not establish who caused the explosion, whether Russian air defenses intercepted the object or what its intended target was.

What happened?

Videos posted on social media show an apparent flying object approaching the shoreline before a fireball erupts. Beachgoers run from the blast as smoke rises from the area. The BBC, CNN and NBC News said they reviewed or verified video showing the explosion. Reports also describe gunfire before the blast, but that detail does not establish what caused the object to fall.

The beach is in or near Arkhipo-Osipovka, within the Gelendzhik resort area. The location is a popular domestic holiday destination on Russia’s Black Sea coast.

Early reports from Russian authorities listed four deaths and 10 injuries. Later statements from Krasnodar regional officials put the death toll at seven. The reports differ over the number of children killed: most cited accounts say three, while one says four. Reported injuries range from 40 to 58, with between 17 and 21 people said to have been hospitalized.

The victims’ names have not been released in the supplied accounts.

What do Russian officials say?

Veniamin Kondratyev, governor of the Krasnodar region, said the incident was a deliberate Ukrainian attack on civilians. Russian officials also said deaths were caused by falling drone debris and described the beach as civilian infrastructure.

The Russian Mission in Geneva also accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians, according to reports. The accounts do not identify a Russian military unit that fired on the object or describe any formal finding from an investigation.

Some beachgoers and residents told local media that no warning sirens sounded before the explosion. That account has not been independently confirmed in the supplied material.

What does Ukraine say?

Andriy Kovalenko, identified in the reports as head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation and as an officer with Ukraine’s Defense Forces, rejected Russia’s account. He said Russian air defenses shot down or intercepted the drone and caused it to fall onto people on the beach.

That explanation is also not independently established. The available reports do not determine whether the object was intercepted, disrupted by electronic warfare, or crashed on its own. Ukraine’s responsibility for launching it has not been established in the supplied material, and no official Ukrainian confirmation of responsibility was reported.

Why is the cause still unclear?

Determining what happened would require evidence such as debris analysis, radar or air-defense records, and an official investigation. The available videos show the final approach and explosion but do not identify the object, its operator or the reason it came down at the beach.

The supplied accounts also do not identify the weapon or drone model, the intended target, or the exact number of people present. As a result, the clearest facts are the location, the explosion and the casualties reported by regional authorities. The central questions — who launched the object and whether Russian defenses caused it to fall — remain disputed.
