Contestants in swim caps and swimsuits lean over a green table, biting into pies at a beach pie‑eating contest, with referees nearby and colorful bunting overhead.

KEY WEST, Fla., July 7 (Our Florida Times) — Kevin Renly, a 62-year-old Florida Keys resident, won Key West’s World Famous Key Lime Pie Eating Championship on July 4, finishing a 9-inch pie in 59.6 seconds without using his hands, according to CBS Miami and the Key West Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber, which stages the contest as part of the Key Lime Festival, said competitors are barred from using hands or utensils. It said the annual event uses whipped-cream-topped 9-inch pies and can draw up to 25 contestants; goggles and dive masks are allowed.

Renly said the trick was to clear away the whipped cream first and then turn the pie over to reach the crust. “My advice is to dive right in. Eliminate the whipped cream. Mix up the crumb with the pie and start sipping it up,” he told CBS Miami.

Fox News reported that Renly had finished runner-up in the previous two contests before winning on his third attempt.
