WASHINGTON, June 4 (DC Times Online) — Secretary of State Marco Rubio objected Wednesday to questioning by Democratic lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in Washington, saying he was not being given enough time to answer on foreign policy issues.
The hearing included discussion of the recent conflict with Iran and other Trump administration foreign policy matters, according to accounts from Fox News, the Washington Examiner and Townhall. The reports described several exchanges as combative.
Rubio criticized the format more than once, saying lawmakers were using their time to question him without allowing a full response. Fox News, the Washington Examiner and Townhall reported that Rubio referred to the proceeding as a “dunk tank” while objecting to the questioning.
The hearing was part of congressional oversight of the State Department, placing the agency’s foreign policy decisions before a House committee based in Washington.
Rubio also called the hearing a “circus” during an exchange with Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., after Jacobs asked about a pair of shoes he had received as a gift from President Donald Trump, according to Fox News and the Washington Examiner.
The Washington Examiner reported that Jacobs also asked Rubio who won the 2020 presidential election. Rubio objected, saying the subject was not appropriate for the Foreign Affairs Committee and that he does not “do campaign,” according to the outlet.
Other Democratic members cited in reports as having testy exchanges with Rubio included Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Calif. The Washington Examiner reported that Dean questioned Rubio in an exchange involving Israel.
Townhall reported that Kamlager-Dove questioned Rubio about the State Department’s fiscal year 2027 budget. The Washington Examiner also reported that Rubio objected during an exchange with Kamlager-Dove over whether he was being allowed time to respond.
Fox News reported that Democrats challenged Rubio on foreign policy, the Iran conflict, Trump’s finances and allegations of corruption within the administration. MEAWW characterized the hearing as a highly contentious political confrontation focused in part on the war with Iran.
Politico separately reported on a May 2025 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing at which Rubio defended the Trump administration’s foreign policy and faced criticism from Senate Democrats. That report concerned a prior Senate hearing, not Wednesday’s House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.
