SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 6 (Our California Times) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump on Monday of directing a politically motivated Justice Department investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, but people familiar with the matter said at least one inquiry began before Trump returned to office.

In an X post and video statement, Newsom called the matter a “fishing expedition” and said he and his wife were on a “hit list.” He said Trump was using federal law enforcement to target political opponents.

People familiar with the investigations said the probes were opened in California, including Sacramento, rather than at Justice Department headquarters in Washington. One Justice Department source said investigators had been looking into matters tied to Newsom’s orbit in the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California for about a year.

The reporting said the inquiries stemmed from whistleblower complaints and local reports in Sacramento. The exact scope of the investigations was not clear in the accounts, and the reporting did not identify any public charging documents against Newsom.
