OCEANSIDE, Calif., July 1 (Laguna Beach Daily) — A Southern California couple says a moving company doubled its quoted price during an interstate move from Oceanside to North Carolina and is still holding their belongings after the higher charge was disputed, according to John Nelson.
Nelson said the move was originally contracted for more than $16,000, and that he paid a $7,000 deposit upfront. He said movers arrived at the couple’s home at the end of May and then claimed there were far more items than had been assessed before increasing the total to $32,000.
Nelson said the couple told the movers they would not be in North Carolina until June 10, but the company still tried to deliver the shipment on June 3. He said the company then added another fee for redelivery after no one was there to accept it.
He said he suspected the June 3 delivery attempt may have been staged after he viewed video of the truck arriving, and described it as a possible façade.
Nelson said the couple filed police reports in Oceanside and in their destination city, and submitted complaints to multiple agencies, including the Better Business Bureau. The company and broker were not named in the supplied account, and the material did not include a response from the mover.
