ATHENS, Greece, July 21 (World Daily Times) — Athens police detained a 60-year-old man after an attack near the Acropolis archaeological site that left a Greek-American couple with injuries police said were not life-threatening.

The Hellenic Police said the attack happened around 8:05 a.m. local time near the southern entrance of the site, opposite the Acropolis Museum and ticket booths. Officers arrested the suspect at the scene.

Police said the motive was not immediately clear and described the attack as appearing random.

The victims were taken to a hospital in Athens after receiving first aid at the scene from responders, including police and emergency medical services. Police said the man suffered the more serious wound, while the woman was injured less severely.

A bystander alerted authorities after seeing a man with a knife near the site, according to police accounts in the reporting. The suspect was expected to appear before a prosecutor later Tuesday, according to AP.
